1999 Scottish Challenge Cup Final
The 1999 Scottish Challenge Cup Final was played on 21 November 1999, at Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie and was the 9th staging of the final in the history of the tournament. It was played between Inverness Caledonian Thistle of the First Division and Alloa Athletic of the Second Division. Alloa Athletic emerged winners after defeating Inverness Caledonian Thistle 5–4 on penalties following a 4–4 draw after extra time.
Route to the final
Inverness Caledonian Thistle
The first round draw brought St. Mirren to face Inverness Caledonian Thistle at the Caledonian Stadium with the home team emerging 1–0 victors. The second round was an away game at Hamilton Academical with Caley Thistle producing a 3–0 win and a second consecutive clean sheet. A home game against Clydebank was the reward for reaching the quarter-finals with Inverness Caledonian Thistle edging the opposition out with another clean sheet in a 2–0 victory. The semi-final draw paired the club with Livingston at home and again Caley Thistle produced another clean sheet in a 1–0 win and a fourth clean sheet of the tournament. Along with Alloa Athletic, Inverness Caledonian Thistle reached the Scottish Challenge Cup Final for the first time in its history.
Alloa Athletic
Alloa Athletic were drawn against Cowdenbeath away from home in the first round and produced a 4–0 victory over the club. The second round also saw The Hornets drawn away from home against Airdrieonians but produced a 2–1 win. Another away game for Alloa Athletic was drawn in the quarter-finals against Ross County which saw the club produce a win after extra time and a second consecutive 2–1 win away from home to progroess to the semi-finals. The opposition provided was Stirling Albion, again away from home and another 2–1 win saw Alloa Athletic reach the Scottish Challenge Cup Final for the first time ever.

Analysis
Alloa Athletic played all four games on the road to the final away from home, with no matches played at their home of Recreation Park. In the process completing only one clean sheet and three consecutive 2–1 victories compared with Inverness Caledonian Thistle's clean sheet record intact, conceding no goals before the final. Caley Thistle played only one game away from home en route to the final.
